Phil Conalane: Son audition pour le final du "Rock or Bust Tour"
En mars 2016, alors que je suis sur mon ordinateur portable en train de surfer sur divers réseaux sociaux et autres journaux en ligne, j’entends le ‘ping’ caractéristique d’un message Facebook. Une personne travaillant comme promoteur en Irlande me demande des infos personnelles. Alors que je lui indique que je ne donne pas mon numéro de téléphone comme cela je réalise que mes collègues de Blackberry Smoke donnent un concert plus tard dans l’année à Dublin et que ce doit être lié à cela.
Le lendemain matin, je vérifie mes e-mails et tombe sur un e-mail d’un agent de Los Angeles avec pour objet « je suis l’agent d'AC/DC » et dans le corps de l'e-mail le simple texte: « est-ce que je peux vous joindre très rapidement? » . Ni une ni deux je me dis « bordel, Blackwater Conspiracy va ouvrir pour AC/DC ! »
Je lui communique mon numéro et à peine quelques minutes après, je reçois son appel. Pour la faire courte.. il m’explique la situation concernant Brian et qu’Angus aimerait que je vienne aux USA pour un Jam en guise d’audition pour le remplacer si j’étais interessé..
6 jours plus tard je suis en première classe sur un vol British Airways à destination d’Atlanta. AC/DC m’a envoyé une limousine pour venir me chercher et réservé une chambre dans un hotel cinq étoiles au centre d’Atlanta. Le tour manager d’AC/DC est sur place et m’indique qu’il viendra me chercher le lendemain à 11 heures direction la salle de répétition. Tout s’est passé si vite que je n’ai pratiquement pas eu le temps de stresser ou de me rendre compte de ce qu’il se passait.
Le lendemain, dans la voiture, le tour manager m’explique que les techniciens vont m’équiper d’un système audio intra-auriculaire, que je devrai chanter sur quelques chansons avant que le groupe nous rejoigne un peu plus tard. Dans l’espace de répétition s’empile le matériel estampillé AC/DC, une ligne d’ampli Marshall, le kit de batterie estampillé Rock or Bust de Chris Slade.
Trace (le technicien d’Angus) finit de m’équiper et nous contrôlons les volumes sur Back in Black. Tout est OK. Quelques minutes plus tard, Cliff Williams, Chris Slade et Stevie Young font leur apparition dans la pièce, se présentent, et me remercient d’être venu. Je discute avec Chris Slade car nous avons pas mal d’amis en commun en Irlande. Quelques minutes plus tard, Angus arrive et pour moi, le stress monte. Il se présente à moi tout simplement en me remerciant lui aussi d’être venu.
Après une tasse de thé (Rock’n’roll hein?), Angus empoigne sa guitare et me demande avec quelle chanson j’aimerais commencer. La setlist du Rock or Bust tour est sur le kit de batterie de Chris, et je demande si on peut commencer par Hell Ain’t a Bad Place To Be. Nous avons ensuite passé les six heures suivantes à éplucher la setlist de la tournée, avec pause thé et cigarettes toutes les 4 ou 5 chansons. L’ambiance était vraiment très décontractée. Angus m’a mis tout de suite à l’aise, en parlant de manière très ouverte et en racontant pas mal d’anecdotes marrantes. Il m’a indiqué m’avoir découvert à travers mon groupe précédent Million Dollar Reload mais qu’il aime aussi beaucoup Blackwater Conspiracy. Il a été totalement transparent quant au fait qu’ils avaient auditionné plusieurs chanteurs la semaine précédente et que j’étais l’avant dernier (Axl venait ensuite).
Il m’a demandé si je serais d’accord pour revenir le lendemain. J’étais scié, prenant ceci comme un signe très positif. Il m’a demandé de penser à une chanson d’AC/DC que j’aimerais chanter. Alors le lendemain je lui ai dis qu’If You Want Blood était ma chanson préférée d’AC/DC. Il a mis un point d’honneur à ce qu’on la répète plusieurs fois pendant la journée bien que me confiant ne l’avoir pas joué depuis un bon moment.
Le volume et la puissance d’AC/DC dans une salle de répétition est absolument incroyable. Et ces 14 cabs Marshall sur scène sont pas là pour décorer.
Après ces quelques jours de rêve dans une salle de répétition avec AC/DC, j’étais sur le chemin de retour pour l’Irlande du Nord (de nouveau en première classe) en train de penser à cette quarantaine de chansons répétées avec AC/DC. Angus m’a indiqué que quoi qu’il en soit il me contacterait la semaine suivante. Comme promis, il m’a envoyé un e-mail la semaine suivante, me remerciant chaleureusement et m’indiquant que le groupe et lui avaient beaucoup aimé ma voix et répéter avec moi. Il m’a bien sûr indiqué que c’est finalement Axl qui tiendrait le micro mais que si je le souhaitais je serais invité sur certains shows. Nous avons rejoint le groupe à Londres sur leur concert à l’Olympic Stadium ainsi que sur le concert au Madison Square Garden de NYC. Brian Collin , ma femme (à ce moment là) et moi avons reçu le package complet.. Inoubliable.
J’ai été chanceux dans ma vie de chanteur Rock, jouant dans de grands festivals, faisant de belles tournées, ouvrant pour de grands groupes mais il n’y a pas d’autre meilleure sensation qu’Angus Young te demandant « hey, tu veux faire Highway To hell Phil? »
Etre là dans les Studio Avatar à Atlanta quand Angus envoie les première notes d’Highway To Hell avec sa SG…. chanter les premiers mots, tourner ma tête à gauche et voir Angus Young à côté.. j’emmènerai ça avec moi dans ma tombe.
AC/DC a toujours été mon groupe préféré et avoir la chance d’avoir passé quelques jours avec eux fut une expérience absolument inoubliable.
Il existe évidemment bien d’autres détails mais je garde le reste de l’histoire pour mon vieux pote Dave et pour mon livre souvenir…
So, in March 2016 im sitting at home one evening on the laptop trawling thru the usual social sites and music webzines when i get the 'ping' of a FB msg. Some guy who works for a promoter here in Ireland and hes asking for my contact info. I tell him i dont give out my contact details, but quickly realising that my buddies in Blackberry Smoke are playing a show in Dublin later in the year and they maybe askin us to open for them again, i give him my details and ask him what its in relation to? He replies that an agent in Los Angeles is askin for my contact. Im pretty sure at this point its connected to Blackberry Smoke.
The next morning i get up and check my emails and sure enough there is an email from an agent in LA. The subject line was not what i was expecting .." i am the agent for AC/DC" ....the email just simply says "can i call you as soon as possible?" My mind was racing and thinking "fuck! Blackwater Conspiracy is gonna get to open for AC/DC!"
I give him my number and he calls me within minutes. Long story short, he tells me that Brian has had to 'step away' from ACDC for medical reasons and that Angus would like me to come over to the US for a bit of a jam (audition) and would i be interested? ....6 days later im on British Airways (1st class) flight to Atlanta . ACDC sent a limo to pick me up and bring me to a 5 star hotel in downtown Atlanta. ACDC tour manager is there waiting and explains to me that the following morning he will come by and pick me up at 11am and we'll go to the rehearsal space and take it from there.
This was all a bit of a whirlwind and didnt really get a chance to get nervous about the whole thing. Next morning comes, i get picked up and on the way the TM explains that the backline techs will get me hooked up with an inear system and we'll jam a few songs before the band get there We get to the rehearsal space in downtown Atlanta and in we go. The halls of the rehearsal space are lined with ACDC flight cases and we walk thru a set of double doors onto the sound stage. Its basically ACDCs stadium stage setup...a wall of Marshall amps and Chris Slades immaculate Rock or Bust tour kit separating the amps. Trace (Angus guitar tech) introduces himself and gets me setup with inears and we take a quick run thru Back in Black to check volume levels. All is good. A few mins later Cliff Williams , Chris Slade and Stevie Young all come into the rehearsal room and introduce themselves and thank me for coming over. Im chattin to Chris Slade for a bit, as we have a mutual friend in Ireland, a few mins later Angus comes in - now im fuckin nervous! He comes over straight away and says "hi Phil , im Angus ...thanks for coming over i appreciate it"
After a quick cup of tea (rock n roll eh?) Angus puts his guitar on and says to me " what song do you want to start with?" The setlist for the Rock or Bust tour is on the drum riser and i ask can we start with 'Hell aint a bad place to be' . The next 6 hrs are spent going through the entire setlist for the tour with tea/smoke breaks every 4 or 5 songs. It was all very relaxed and chilled. Angus made me feel very relaxed and during tea breaks would chat freely and tell funny stories. He told me he had discovered me thru my old band Million Dollar Relaod but that he really like Blackwater Conspiracy too! Who knew!! He made it clear that there was a couple of guys that he had in for a few songs over the past week and that i was the last guy except for 1 more the following week (Axl) . He asked me would i come back the following day and do it again? That blew me away and i took it as a positive sign. He asked me to think of an ACDC sing that i really would like to do. The following day i told him If you want blood was my favourite DC song. He made a point of doin that song a couple of times that day...even tho he said they hadnt played it for years.
The volume and power of ACDC in a rehearsal room on a full stage setting is unbelievable...oh and every one of those 14 marshall cabs on Angus side of the stage is hooked up and blaring at full tilt.
After a whirlwind few days in a rehearsal room with ACDC i was on my way back to N.Ireland. sittin in first class reflecting on the 40+ songs i got to sing with ACDC in Atlanta. Angus made it clear that he would be in contact the following week. True to his word he sent an email a week later thanking me for coming over to America and that loved my voice and told me that he and the band enjoyed rehearsals with me. Obviously he mentioned the small fact that Axl Rose was gonna fill in for the rest of the tour ,but if there was any shows i wanted to do that i would be welcomed as a guest. Sure enough we went to the London show at the Olympic Stadium and the NYC gig at Madison Square Garden. Brian Colin and my then wife at the time, done the NYC gig ...the whole nine yards , backstage , hospitality etc. That was awesome.
So thats my fav rock n roll experience , the shortened version. All i can say is Angus and all of the band and crew are the nicest ppl ever. Treated me with the utmost friendliness and respect. Its 4 years later and i still keep in contact with the ACDC camp.
Ive been very lucky in my rock n roll adventures playing big festivals, touring , opening for some big bands and generally getting to make music with my mates but.....
There is no feeling in the world that will ever beat Angus Young saying "wanna do Highway to hell Phil?" ..... standing in Avatar studios in Atlanta Georgia when that opening riff from HTH is played on that black Gibson SG Angus uses....singing the first verse and turning my head to the left and seeing Angus Young 2 feet away while i rip into that chorus with ACDC. That feeling i will take to my grave.
ACDC have been my favourite all time band and to get to spend a few days with them and sing with them was an unbelievable experience.
Theres a lot more detail to this story , but i promised my aul buddy Dave the rest of it ...and i'll save that for my memoirs too
