J’avais 17 ans en 1970, j’ai récupéré un appareil photos et j’ai commencé à fréquenter les clubs et les concerts histoire de prendre une bonne photo de mes groupes fétiches.
Un Monsieur avec un grand M, Alex Cooley, était le promoteur des concerts à Atlanta. Il était aussi propriétaire d’un Club, le “Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom”, et il était toujours à l’affut pour obtenir une photo front row. J’y suis allé un soir, et je lui ai demandé comment obtenir un pass photo presse. Il m’a répondu que pour ce faire il fallait que je bosse pour quelqu’un. Pas abattu, je lui ai demandé si je pouvais bosser... pour lui. Il m’a demandé de revenir le voir au bureau, je lui ai apporté quelques clichés qu’il a adorés. Les 5 années qui ont suivi, Alex et son équipe se sont arrangés de manière à ce que je puisse prendre des photos durant tous les shows.
Quand tu deviens un photographe de rock, en général il est clair que tu ne contrôles absolument pas les conditions dans lesquelles tu vas devoir photographier. Les lumières varient, les artistes sur scène se déplacent, ce qui rend l’exercice délicat. J’aime quand le groupe que je shoote envoie, tout ce que tu souhaites faire alors c’est capturer cette énergie.
Venons-en à AC/DC ! Quand j’ai découvert le groupe, ça été le coup de foudre immédiat. Fan des Stones, j’ai toujours été attiré par le rock’n roll, et oui, avec AC/DC, ça vraiment été l’adhésion totale à la première écoute. Plus tard, j’ai pris des photos pour un autre promoteur de concerts, Rich Floyd. Il ouvrait un nouveau club « le Capri » (1). Le 27 novembre 1977 (2), AC/DC y jouait en première partie. C’est la seule fois où j’ai eu l’opportunité de les shooter, durant le « Dirty Deeds Tour » (3). Le groupe avait empilé là un énorme tas d'amplis et d'enceintes. Gardez à l’esprit que cette salle pouvait accueillir 400 personnes ! Ce fut vraiment l’un des shows les plus forts qui soit. Sans mentir, à un moment donné durant le show je suis allé dans ce bar dans la rue. Un type demandait au patron de baisser le son d’AC/DC !
Capturer l’énergie d’AC/DC sur une photo, c’était honnêtement mettre à profit la capacité que j’avais de capturer la puissance dégagée par un groupe sur scène. Je pense que mes photos d’Angus démontrent bien cela. Tu les regardes et tu sens cette incroyable énergie transparaitre.
AC/DC a réussi à maintenir bien vivant le vrai rock’n roll. Et soyons honnêtes, il en reste peu des comme eux. Je les seulement suivis au fil de leurs 3 premiers albums, bien que Brian Johnson soit lui-même un formidable performer. AC/DC is ROCK AND ROLL !

In 1970 when I was 17, I picked up a camera and just started going to clubs and concert trying to get a good picture of my favorite groups.There was a gentleman named Alex Cooley who was Atlanta's concert promoter. Well Alex also owned a club called Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom, always wanting to get that front row shot, I went to Alex's club one night. I introduced myself and asked how do you get those press passes. He told me you have to work for someone. Not dejected, I asked if I could work for him and he told me to come by the office. I took him some shots, he loved them. For the next 5 years or so Alex and his staff made arrangements for me to shot his shows. Until it became a hassle for him and frankly me.
For Rock photography, in general you do not have any control over the conditions in which you are trying to shot. Lights changing and performers moving, makes it tricky.
Let's talk about AC/DC ! Discover AC/DC was like love at first sight/hear. As a Stones fan I was always drawn to good Rock and Roll, and yes, it was love at first listen. I guess as a photographer I like it when the band you are photographing just brings it. And all you want to do is capture that energy somehow.
Back then I took pictures for another promoter named Rich Floyd. He was opening a new club called The Capri (1). On November 27, 1977 (2), his opening act was AC/DC. I was only able to photograph AC/DC that one time, during the "Dirty Deeds tour" (3). Well they proceeded to load in craploads of P.A. Keep in mind this is a venue that seats about 400 It was one of the loudest shows ever. No lie,at one point in the show I went across the street to this bar and a guy was asking the bartender to turn down the AC/DC. Capture the AC/DC live energy ? Honestly, I think that was the natural ability I had to capture a bands energy. I think my shot of Angus shows that. You look at that picture and you can feel Angus's energy.
AC/DC has managed to keep real Rock and Roll alive. Let's face it there is little of it still around. I followed them through there first 3 albums. Although Brian Johnson is a great performer. Right now I just opened a web site 'inconcertphotos.com" These are some of my favorite shots of some rare and unseen photos.
